Object Recognition in Mental Representations: Directions for Exploring Diagnostic Features through Visual Mental Imagery

چکیده

One of the fundamental goals of object recognition research is to understand how a cognitive representation produced from the output of filtered and transformed sensory information facilitates efficient viewer behavior. Given that mental imagery strongly resembles perceptual processes in both cortical regions and subjective visual qualities, it is reasonable to question whether mental imagery facilitates cognition in a manner similar to that of perceptual viewing: via the detection and recognition of distinguishing features. Categorizing the feature content of mental imagery holds potential as a reverse pathway by which to identify the components of a visual stimulus which are most critical for the creation and retrieval of a visual representation. This review will examine the likelihood that the information represented in visual mental imagery reflects distinctive object features thought to facilitate efficient object categorization and recognition during perceptual viewing. If it is the case that these representational features resemble their sensory counterparts in both spatial and semantic qualities, they may well be accessible through mental imagery as evaluated through current investigative techniques. In this review, methods applied to mental imagery research and their findings are reviewed and evaluated for their efficiency in accessing internal representations, and implications for identifying diagnostic features are discussed. An argument is made for the benefits of combining mental imagery assessment methods with diagnostic feature research to advance the understanding of visual perceptive processes, with suggestions for avenues of future investigation.

Detecting Affordances by Mental Imagery

The term “mental imagery” describes the process of activating sensory and/or motor representations within the cognitive system of an agent without actual sensory inflow and without actually executing motor actions (e.g., [1]). We suggest that mental imagery could be the basis for the detection of affordances [2] in visual perception. Affordances are the behavior–related properties of entities i...

Mental Imagery and the Varieties of Amodal Perception

The problem of amodal perception is the problem of how we represent features of perceived objects that are occluded or otherwise hidden from us. Bence Nanay (2010) has recently proposed that we amodally perceive an object’s occluded features by imaginatively projecting them into the relevant regions of visual egocentric space. In this paper, I argue that amodal perception is not a single, unita...

Priming, Perceptual Reversal, and Circular Reaction in a Neural Network Model of Schema-Based Vision

VISOR is a neural network system for object recognition and scene analysis that learns visual schemas from examples. Processing in VISOR is based on cooperation, competition, and parallel bottom-up and top-down activation of schema representations. Similar principles appear to underlie much of human visual processing, and VISOR can therefore be used to model various perceptual phenomena. This p...

Association between Social Anxiety and Visual Mental Imagery of Neutral Scenes: The Moderating Role of Effortful Control

According to cognitive theories, verbal processing attenuates emotional processing, whereas visual imagery enhances emotional processing and contributes to the maintenance of social anxiety. Individuals with social anxiety report negative mental images in social situations. However, the general ability of visual mental imagery of neutral scenes in individuals with social anxiety is still unclea...

Congenital prosopagnosia. Diagnosis and mental imagery: commentary on "Tree JJ, and Wilkie J. Face and object imagery in congenital prosopagnosia: a case series.".

In a sample of four prosopagnosics Tree and Wilkie (2010) found an imagery deficit for faces, while the self-report questionnaires they used did not show any reduction in the vividness of visual mental imagery (VVMI). They did not find any reduction of mental imagery for objects or colors in their subjects. The authors tested the imagery with a set of questions about external and internal facia...
